Like most sports cruisers, the Genesis 400 Saloon is designed to be a home away from home and it features all the amenities required for weekends away or even for a couple to do some extended cruising.

The main difference with the Saloon model is that it features a big sliding glass door, which separates the saloon from the cockpit. This way it doesn't matter what the weather is like outside, you can tuck yourself away with the air-conditioning or heating on and watch a DVD or read a book. There is still plenty of natural light, with big side windows and two sliding sunroofs overhead.

Venture aboard the Genesis via a big teak-laid swim platform and twin cockpit doors allow the platform to flow through to the big teak-topped cockpit and aft amenities centre. This way, you can increase the boat's usable space when at anchor. The boarding platform has stainless clips for attaching the rib inflatable, a concealed swim ladder and two built-in bait or wet-gear bins. There are rope lockers and a shore power connection.

A mighty amenities centre, which you operate while standing on the boarding platform and facing back into the cockpit, includes a moulded sink with hot/cold tap and handheld shower, soap dispenser, food prep space and a terrific Magma gas barbecue. The gas bottle is in a cockpit locker along with a raw-water deck wash. But as the boat comes with a 6kVa Lombardini generator (optional), you could run an electric BBQ if you preferred.

As you access the saloon from the cockpit through the big sliding door, there is a cabinet directly to starboard which houses an icemaker, drinking glass drawers and a bottle rack. There is a good-sized dinette to port and a two-seater lounge to starboard. A Phillips flat screen TV can be viewed from the lounge with the DVD player recessed behind the helm chair.

The saloon layout is very social with the helm, dinette and lounge all at the same level so conversation can be made even while underway. And although the galley is at mezzanine level, the chef can still converse with people in the saloon.

Appropriate lighting and air-conditioning vents are strategically positioned throughout the saloon and a lazarette below the saloon floor provides good storage space for items not regularly required.

The helm provides good vision and the comfortable seat suits either a seated or standing helm position. The twin seat is even wide enough to get cozy with your co-pilot, if you want.

Three steps down from the saloon on the port side you'll find a well, finished and fairly spacious galley. High-gloss cherry wood timber cabinetry and Avonite bench tops provide a sophisticated look.
There are four wood veneers and colour co ordinated contrasting themes available.
Plenty of storage space is provided via under bench drawers and cupboards as well as drop-down overhead cabinets. Galley features include a convection microwave, two-burner electric hob, stainless steel sink, under bench freezer, fridge, and recessed rubbish bin.

Opposite the galley on the starboard side is the guest accommodation. A double bunk that runs back under the helm area is an acceptable size and makes a good backup if friends decide to stay aboard for the night.

Ask anyone what they dislike most about boat bathrooms and I bet nine out of 10 will reply, "wet toilet seats after someone has just had a shower".

Genesis has solved this problem on the 400 Targa Saloon by splitting the toilet and shower into two totally separate cabins - toilet to port and shower to starboard.

The forward cabin is the master stateroom and is separated from the companionway by a privacy screen rather than a lockable door. An island berth takes pride of place in the bow but Genesis can option this forward cabin with vee-berths if required.

The boat is made using modular construction and a combination of solid GRP and cored decks. The windscreen is safety glass and all the deck gear is through-bolted solid stainless steel.

Up front, the boat has a well designed bowsprit with a canting roller mechanism to keep the chain clear of the deck. There is a deep split chain/rope locker and a Maxwell 122 windlass with bow and dash controls, a raw-water deck wash is optional.
The stainless bow rail (with fender baskets) rakes outboard and the decks are cambered on the sides. These features add to the boat's style. Thankfully, there is a good grade of non-skid, two central grab rails - to which you can attach the optional sun pad - and wide side decks and grab rails to help your passage from the cockpit.

Full throttle Twin Volvo KAD300 stern drives return 37 knots. Comfort cruising comes in at 3000rpm and 23.6kt, and 3300-3400rpm for a fast continuous speed of 28.1kt. With 17.5° of dead rise and a sharp entry, certainly finer than some 40-footers, the 400 Targa runs smoothly at a neutral trim setting. The spray is thrown to the sides and the boat runs nicely in all directions. However, with a touch of in-trim, you can button the bow down, cut through the chop even better and still get a dry ride.

The stern drive legs ensure that the handling is sporty. The boat arcs around sharply. In fact, it almost steers off the bow and can be pulled around quite suddenly, thanks also to the Duo props. Acceleration is impressive with both supercharger and turbo on the 285hp KAD300 Volvo engines. Volvo's new inboard propulsion system can also be an exciting option, along with standard shaft V drive installation.

Dry and comfortable, the internal driving station offers good views. And because you don't get the full sensation of speed - no wind in the hair or watering eyes - you always feel in control of the boat. With the hatches open, you get good flow-through ventilation for summer boating.

Contemporary styling, practical amenities, big indoor/outdoor living areas, all-weather comforts, functional and almost futuristic finish down below. Along with terrific seaworthiness, this cruiser has it all.
